Safety Radio System for Mineworkers under Ground

The Safety Radio System was first designed for the locating of buried and trapped miners. The order for the development of such a system came in 1986 from the Ruhrkohle AG, and for this, requested a research and development project to be established by the German Ministery for research, wich was granded.

The dangers for the Mineworkers are basically the same worldwide:

  • Man proceeds towards the bowels of the earth and exposes himself to the danger of being trapped under falling rock and earth. The tunnels can be supported and secured, but the possibility, that a rockburst occurs or the support collapses, remains.

  • Man takes machines underground to assist his work. These machines require space, confining the working area for man and creating, due to ist mechanics with moving-parts, a further danger.
How can the safety be improved, to protect the life and health of Mineworkers ?

Our Safety-Radio-System can help you:
  • At the location of buried Mineworkers
  • At the protection of dangerous areas of machines
  • At the monitoring of a mine to detect persons in special areas
  • At the monitoring of the working-time of persons in areas with can lead to long-term damage of health
How do the Safety-Radio-System work ?

The basic technique of our Systems is the electromagnetic comunication between a transmitter / receiver and a receiver / transmitter. On a to-be-protected or to-be-located person is on his belt a receiver-/transmitter-modul (PKB), which in a dangerous situation electromagnetic rediated and therefore activated to transmitt a 2nd electromagnetic answering-signal. The received signals from the basic-receiver (POG) are processed in the base unit to:
  • in case of tracking with POG to detect the position and distance of the buried transmitter-modul (person)
  • in the danger-area of machines initiate with ÜSG a switch-off procedure in case of entering of the transmitter-module (person) in the danger-area.
What is the Safety-Radio-System able to do ?

  • accurately localize burried miners up to 7 meters in respect of position, distance and direction.
  • Swith off transportation devices and machines in case of persons are endangered by them or entering danger areas.
The personal receiver / transmitter PKB 0102-D

Is a miniaturized receiver / transmitter modul with its own battery. Its dimensions are 52 x 44 x 17 mm and its weight is about 52 g. The PKB consists of a 2 chamber-box. In one part of the box the electronic with the receiver and transmitter-antennas is sealed mounted, in the other part the two 1,5V alcaline-batteries in parallel-connection are unsealed placed, they can be replaced by normal-use after about 4 years. The PKB has therefore a low-batt-function, which reports a low battery to the checking-unit STG 0107.

The tracking-unit POG 0102

Is in case of tracking a person the counterpart to the personal receiver / transmitter PKB. The POG activates through its transmission of 9 kHz the PKB and receives its transmitted, electromagnetic waves of 455 kHz. The answering-signal of the person transmitter is only the reply of the produced coupling. The tracking works with a hand-held antenna, a loop-antenna with a diameter of about 50 cm and a weight of about 1200 g. The tracking-antenna is connected to the POG with a 1,10 m cable. The tracking works in case of, that the antenna is to be moved on the stretched arm inside a thought spherical-surface. The direction of the stretched arm at the best signal back from the PKB at lowest output-signal at the POG ist the position and the number on the scale of the output power-regulator of the POG is the distance in m. The signal in the headphone is only to check, if it is contact or not with the PKB, the frequency is the help to recognize by ear, if the PKB is far or near at tracking (high frequency is near, low is far). The maximum range of detection is about 10 m through rock/coal/waste.
The POG is distributed by a connected Lithium-battery. The capacity is enough for 10 hrs constant-tracking. The system is in use since 1991 and at 1.1.2000 are in Germany 9 complete mines equipped with the system.

Crossing Protection System for Conveyer Belts ÜSG 103A

In some mines of the Ruhrkohle AG there happend to the end of the years 80 some accidents with man-riding conveyorbelts with serious and two fatal unjuries. In all instances, the miners have been huried over the throwing-down point of the conveyor-belts, into coal bins, or from geat hights onto moving transport systems. These incidents caused RAG to instruct Selectronic with the further development of the Location System to a Crossing Protection System for Conveyor Belts. The Personal Identification Modul (PKB) was again only to be used as a mobile receiver / transmitter (transponder).
A base.station for the transmission of the wake up signal and for the detection of the answering-signal was to be developed new.

The crossing Protection System for Conveyor Belts consists today of a Base-Unit ÜSG 0103-A with a compact-antenna for the 9 kHz transmission frequency and for the answering signal of 455 kHz from the PKB. The antenna is mounted 0,6 m in the middle above the conveyor belt on a swivel mechanism. The frequency "Cloud" covers the existing wide of the belt. If a PKB (person) comes into the magnetic-field, so the PKB transmitts its 455 kHz answering-signal. This signal will be received from the receiving-antenna and served to the ÜSG-Base-Unit

The ÜSG detects the signal as a crossing of a dangerous area and forces so the switch-off of the conveyor-belt. To reset this function it is to push a reset-switch on the ?SG. The unit is in it its detection-electronic double built and contains of a continous self-check of the system. The system transmitts for control of the antenna cables and the working area continous a modified signal with the same frequency like the PKB. Is this signal missed in one of the two detection-logics, so the ?SG switches the conveyor-belt off and shows System - Alarm. The unit needs 12 VDC at a currant of 0,4 A max.

Crusher Protection-Systems ÜSG 0103 AZ

Based on the Crossing Protection System ÜSG 0103 A for Conveyor Belts is a new development and variation done for the Crusher-Protection at the input of crushers. The PKB 0102 D is again the signal-unit on the belt of the miner. This system will prevent miners, having embarked on a crusher chain conveyor, from being fed to the crusher and killed. The technique of the Crusher Protection System is similar to the Crossing Protection System in so far, that a 9 KHz calling signal field is established ahead of the crusher entrance. Should an PKB ( person ) come in reach of this field, so his PKB transmitts an answering signal and the unit ÜSG 0103 AZ together with ist special-antenna forces the crusher and the chain conveyor to stop immediately.

A first crusher-Protection-System was installed 1996 in the German mine Friedrich-Heinrich-Rheinland.
Meanwhile are more than 70 units installed.

System-Test-Unit ( STG 0107 )

The personal receiver / transmitter PKB 0102 D will be tested by a System-Test-Unit STG 0107 for correct function and low-batterie. Correct function will be indicated by red and green Lamps, low-battery of the PKB will be indicated by an additional acustic signal.
